Why Teach?

When it comes to why I want to become a teacher, I've always known that it's what I wanted to do.  I grew up as an only child and I was constantly coming up with ways to entertain myself, one of the things I did was play "school" with my stuffed animals. Doing that made me really passionate to become a teacher and ever since then I have made it my dream to be a real teacher! Originally I wanted to teach elementary school, however recently I discovered that I have a passion for working with middle-aged children. I worked as a camp counselor over the summer and I realized that younger kids aren't a good fit for me. In high school I was a part of the teacher prep program and doing that also helped grow my passion for teaching. 

 

I would love to teach middle school or high school. I really enjoy working with the middle grades because they are a lot easier to talk to and they are able to be more independent. The ideal subject I would teach would be physical education or health. I'm super passionate about fitness and health especially when it comes to children. I believe that the childhood obesity epidemic is out of control and I would love to help children learn healthy lifestyle habits and make a positive impact on their lives while doing so.

    Wow! You are so fortunate to have such a clear vision of what you'd like to do when you become a teacher. Yes. The obesity epidemic is overwhelming.

    Since, you wish to teach middle or high school, have you spoken to your advisor about that?

How do we talk about issues that matter?

  I think talking about controversial issues in the classroom is an important thing to do and include in the classroom as a teacher. After reading this week's materials and watching the videos I have a better understanding of why we need to teach our students to participate in emotional, deep conversations. I believe we can do this by facilitating conversations between students and asking them broad open-ended questions that can lead them to have respectful conversations. I also believe we can do this by reminding our students that everyone has their own opinion and that it is completely OK to have an opinion different than their classmates, but we as teachers also need to remind the students that it is not OK to bully or put others down for having a different opinion than their own. Do I have the full picture?

  When it comes to understanding what the “full picture” is in the education system, we first must define what the full picture is. To me, the full picture is understanding all sides of history, and culture from a nonbias perspective. As teachers, we need to make sure that their education system is not failing them and that our students can be able to understand the full picture.  This week after reading the module I have come to the understanding that we currently don’t have the full picture of our education system, however, this does not mean that we cannot change this.  We can help our students to understand the full picture in history classes by teaching them all sides of history and not just telling it from one perspective.
